Unknown artist, Hiruta?: Dog

Japan, Showa period, 1980s

Enquire

Colour screen print, 50 x 48 cm, ed. 10/15. Titled Dog in Japanese and signed in pencil Hiruta ?
Print in very good condition.

The print shows a surreal scene with a woman sitting by a table, her face is washed out. Behind her are two dogs depicted as a mirror image of each other.

The sosaku hanga (“creative prints”) movement embraced the individuality of the artist, thereby turning its back to the collaborative system of ukiyo-e and the print as a mass media. Whereas some sosaku hanga artists continued to work with traditional Japanese themes and woodblock printing many moved to abstract, surreal and non-Japanese subjects, as well as experimenting with Western printing methods such as silkscreen printing.
