Ichihara Arinori (1910-2010) was born in Nakagawa-cho, Tokushima and moved together with his family to Hokkaido when he was three years old. Based in Otaru, he concentrated vigorously on printmaking. In the late 1950s, he began working on monotype employing a litho stone. From then on, he consistently pursued expressions in monotype and experimental metal intaglio, winning acclaim in Japan and abroad. He continuously broke the bounds of common practices and increased the potential of printmaking by striking, scraping, and biting the surface of metals such as copper, iron, zinc, aluminum, stainless steel, or the body of a scrapped car to produce his plates.
